Removal Tips 2: Packing for Washing Machine
- Make sure to book your removal provider well in advance to ensure the removal company is available for your preferred time.
- Start your packing much earlier than you think you will need – it’s amazing how much time it takes to box things up and you want to ensure the removal team is not waiting around for you to finish putting things into boxes. After all, you’ll be paying for them to stand around.
- Keep your removal company up to date of any likely changes to your completion date. The more in the loop you keep them, the more likely they will be to work around any issues that arise – and if you end up having to cancel them on the day, you could incur a full days costs to cover their wages.
- If you’re transporting a lot of possessions, make sure your removal company visits your property for a viewing (don’t just rely on email or telephone communication).
- Talk to the removal company or the “man and van” about how you should prepare your belongings. For example, do they want to put furniture, like wardrobes, in the vehicle first? If so, making sure the wardrobes are closer to the entrance and not blocked in by boxes can save considerable time and energy.
- Most removal firms work standard hours so make sure to ask what happens if you go over this time – are there penalty fees?
- Check with your household policy before you buy extra insurance –some will already cover you for moving.
- Think about parking well in advance (if you don’t have a car, you might have to organise parking permits). Don’t forget this could apply to the home you’re moving from as well as the new one you’re moving to.
- Advising your neighbours that a removal vehicle will be parked outside your home is also a good idea.
- Consider access – do you need to take down furniture to get them through doorways or down stairs?
- Don’t overfill boxes making them too heavy to carry (also, they might break). Books are a major culprit when it comes to weight – pack them in smaller sized boxes instead.
- Under filling boxes can also be an issue, as they will crumple if stacked under heavier things. Try to achieve a good balance (for more information see our Packing Guide, and mark any fragile boxes accordingly so your removal people are aware of what’s inside.
- When loading the vehicle in inner city areas, factor in a person in the vehicle to keep an eye on your belongings – it’s surprising how long it can take to carry items out to the removal vehicle, and an unguarded partly loaded van could prove too tempting to opportunistic thieves.
- Even the best laid plans can go wrong, and a removal company with the best intentions can have issues, so it’s always a good idea to have a contingency plan up your sleeve (another removal company’s number loaded in your phone, for example).
- Find out how many people from the removal company will actually be doing the carrying and loading (do they expect you to carry things to the vehicle too or can you continue with last minute packing)? If you hire a man and a van they might be more of an expectation that you’ll load too (unless they bring someone else to help).
- Ask if your removal or “man and van” company has blankets to protect furniture from scratching during transportation.
- If you’re moving your possessions a long way, what happens to the removal vehicle overnight? Will it be in a safe place? Check with the removal firm and ensure you have insurance to cover any mishaps.
- Make sure you have access to a kettle to make hot drinks (until the final sweep), bottled water and some snacks to keep you and your removal team hydrated and energised.
- Once the vehicle is fully loaded, walk around the house to ensure all items have been moved and nothing is forgotten.
- Factor in travel time – and traffic – if you’re paying for your removal company by the hour.
